University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC) Ireland has selected Meditech’s intelligent electronic health record (EHR) software, Expanse, to support its digital transformation.
Expanse is designed to adapt and grow along with the customers’ needs, and its web-based platform is fully interoperable for connected care and leverages cloud technology and AI.
UPMC Ireland will implement Expanse across its four hospitals, two cancer centres, and six sports medicine clinics, creating a unified platform for improved patient outcomes.
By adopting Meditech Expanse, it aims to enhance patient care and simplify its operations.
UPMC Ireland managing director Eamonn Fitzgerald said: “This represents a transformational step forward in how we deliver care for both our patients and our people.
“By connecting every part of the patient journey through a single, secure electronic health record, we are creating a system that is safer, faster, and more efficient.
“This investment ensures that our clinicians and staff have access to the tools and information they need to deliver access to care to communities across the island of Ireland. This is another step in delivering life-changing medicine together.”
The integration of Expanse will establish a single patient record, facilitate seamless information sharing between locations, and enhance decision-making and care coordination.
UPMC said the move aligns with its goal of leading global care transformation and will standardise core evidence-based practices across its facilities to support connected care.
By implementing Expanse Revenue Cycle, the healthcare provider aims to simplify workflows, maximise efficiencies, and improve financial health.
The platform’s patient portal will further engage patients by providing access to health information, appointment details, and secure communication with providers.
UPMC Ireland chief information officer Pat Cronin said: “This implementation marks a major milestone in UPMC’s digital transformation, giving us a unified, cloud-based electronic health record that replaces legacy systems.
“It will empower clinicians and staff with faster, more connected access to information, supporting smarter decision-making and improved care coordination.
“Beyond enhancing patient safety and operational efficiency, this system will serve as the digital foundation for long-term innovation and scalable, data-driven care across our network.”
UPMC considers Expanse’s web-native, cloud-based technology as a catalyst for future growth and innovation across its hospitals, cancer centres, and clinics.
The platform offers modern digital infrastructure, advanced interoperability, and flexibility, and its built-in safeguards ensure data security, patient privacy, and GDPR compliance.
MEDITECH Ireland managing director Charlotte Scott said: “We are thrilled to partner with UPMC to implement Expanse and support them in their mission to always put the patient first.
“This is a game-changer for the organisation and the patients it cares for. The EHR will enable more connected and better care today while also positioning UPMC for future growth and innovation.”
Recently, Harbor Regional Health in Aberdeen, Washington, has selected the Meditech Expanse electronic health record (EHR) system to modernise its care delivery.
The implementation of the EHR system is part of a 33-year partnership with Meditech.
The partnership aims to enhance patient experience and streamline clinician workflows through the cloud-based Meditech-as-a-Service (MaaS) subscription model.
