Trillium Health Partners and the Ontario Government have commenced construction on the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children.
The new hospital aims to meet the increasing healthcare demand in Mississauga, one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities.
It triples the size of the existing hospital, integrates advanced technology and data analytics, enhancing patient care by extending services beyond traditional hospital settings.
Trillium Health’s advanced model will focus on proactive, personalised, and coordinated care, shaped by ongoing collaboration with clinical providers, patients, and the community.
The project employs a public-private partnership (P3) model, with ED+PCL Healthcare Partners, Infrastructure Ontario, and the Ministry of Health working together.
Its design prioritises efficiency and cost-effectiveness, leveraging existing properties and standardising patient rooms and surgical suites.
The new hospital is expected to be completed by 2033, with operations transitioning in 2034.
Trillium Health Partners President and CEO Karli Farrow said: “The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will serve as specialised hubs of cutting-edge care that is digitally connected to the community, from primary care to clinics and long-term care, to put people at the centre.
“Today’s groundbreaking is a testament to what’s possible when government, donors, and community come together with a shared vision for the future.
“We are deeply grateful to the Government of Ontario, the City of Mississauga, our generous donors, Team THP, our many partners, and the entire community who are helping us build a new era of health care.”
The new hospital is expected to boost Mississauga’s economy, attracting 2,400 healthcare professionals and over 400 doctors, contributing an estimated $1bn over 10 years.
Key features of the new hospital include over 950 beds in private rooms, 23 advanced operating rooms, a large emergency department, and advanced diagnostic facilities.
In addition, the hospital will offer underground parking, faith spaces, and green areas to enhance patient comfort and experience.
The Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will be the first in Ontario to provide specialised care for reproductive, gynaecological, paediatric, and postpartum needs.
It will feature 31 birthing suites, 53 postpartum beds, an expanded NICU, 36 paediatric beds, and specialised surgical suites.
The facility will also include family-friendly spaces, such as a paediatric zone in the emergency department and infant feeding rooms.
