Humana, a US health and well-being company, has partnered with health technology firm DrFirst to launch a programme aimed at addressing care gaps for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The initiative focuses on enhancing statin therapy usage among eligible patients in the US, aligning with the quality metrics set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Statins have been associated with lower cardiovascular risks and improved outcomes for certain Medicare patients, offering potential reductions in healthcare costs.

Humana pharmacy president Bethanie Stein said: “We’re not just flagging care opportunities—we’re making sure they get to providers in a way that’s timely and easy to act on.

“By reaching providers in their workflow, we’re freeing them to focus on patient care, which in turn can help address gaps in care, promote quality and lead to better health outcomes.”

Humana is utilising DrFirst’s prescription orchestration platform to facilitate new prescription recommendations for high-risk patients within the clinical workflow. This allows healthcare providers to approve these recommendations or indicate if they are unsuitable for specific patients.

DrFirst’s platform supports real-time clinical collaboration by connecting healthcare providers, pharmacies, and payers. It aims to close critical information gaps and improve patient outcomes through enhanced interoperability.

The partnership between Humana and DrFirst builds on a longstanding relationship that began in 2015. That year, the companies launched a real-time prescription benefit tool to provide insights into patient coverage, costs, and prior authorisation requirements during prescribing.

DrFirst CEO Laizer Kornwasser said: “This partnership is about more than innovative technology; it’s about better patient outcome.

“As a company dedicated to taking the friction out of health care, it’s especially meaningful to introduce an entirely new approach to medication management.”

Last month, Hackensack Meridian Health has integrated DrFirst’s artificial intelligence (AI) tools with its Epic electronic health record system. This integration allows medical staff to access patient medication histories and insurance details more efficiently.

DrFirst’s solutions include AI-driven data optimisation to reduce manual data entry errors, real-time prescription price transparency to address financial barriers, and personalised patient messaging for improved medication adherence.
