Cleveland Clinic has partnered with Ambience Healthcare to deploy the latter’s AI platform for documentation, clinical documentation integrity (CDI), and point-of-care coding.
The AI technology aims to enhance personal interaction during patient visits while reducing the administrative workload for caregivers.
As part of the initiative, clinicians at Cleveland Clinic will get access to the AI documentation software to record patient appointments and generate comprehensive medical notes.
The AI-generated notes will be reviewed and approved by care providers before they are uploaded to the patient’s medical records.
The technology also provides patients, their families, and caregivers with customised after-visit summaries.
Ambience Healthcare co-founder and CEO Michael Ng said: “We’re honoured to be partnered with Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s premier academic medical centres.
“This collaboration is a testament to what’s possible when clinical leaders and AI researchers come together to solve some of the most important healthcare challenges.”
Cleveland Clinic said Ambience Healthcare’s AI platform is designed to assist with clinical documentation but does not diagnose or treat medical conditions.
Healthcare providers are required to review, verify, and modify the generated notes as needed before finalising them.
Also, clinicians working in ambulatory settings can use the software on an optional basis, and patients will be informed before the use of the AI tool and can decline its application.
Cleveland Clinic chief digital officer Rohit Chandra said: “The promise of AI in healthcare is that it will enable us to care for patients with a higher level of safety and quality and a better patient and caregiver experience.
“Our implementation of ambient AI technology delivers on that promise because it helps our providers fully engage with their patients, saves time, and alleviates some of their administrative burden.”
Cleveland Clinic conducted a pilot programme throughout 2024, assessing AI-driven documentation solutions across more than 80 medical specialities and subspecialties.
The clinic plans to implement a phased rollout of Ambience Healthcare’s AI technology for ambulatory providers across its US facilities, in the next months.
Cleveland Clinic enterprise chief of staff Beri Ridgeway said: “We are committed to finding innovative ways to support our providers and reduce administrative burden and burnout while enriching patient experience.
“Our clinicians reported their enjoyment with more face-to-face patient interaction, and that the software provided detailed notes that improved care coordination across specialties. Importantly, they also felt less burnout.”
Last year, Cleveland Clinic, a non-profit academic medical centre, partnered with health technology firm Masimo to improve hospital-based remote patient monitoring (RPM).
