Akumin announced that its first two AXIS Expandable Patient Solutions have been deployed at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Mississippi and Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center in Virginia.

The AXIS solutions incorporate advanced positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging technology

The units are designed to streamline operations and enhance access to medical services within the respective communities, said Akumin.

Akumin CEO Henry Howe said: “Akumin AXIS was designed based on direct feedback from our hospital partners, who face the challenges of high construction costs, limited capital, and growing patient demand.

“By offering a fully equipped solution that can be operational in as little as 60 days, Akumin AXIS is already being recognised as a revolutionary model for expanding access to advanced imaging services.”

According to Akumin, its AXIS Expandable Patient Solutions provide hospitals with a flexible approach to advanced care delivery.

They can accommodate more patients than standard trailers, improving efficiency and access to diagnostic services.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, a 339-bed facility in Mississippi, will use the AXIS unit to expand its diagnostic capabilities and meet the region’s growing health needs.

The hospital has recently invested in infrastructure improvements, including a $19m emergency department expansion and a new $55m office building.

Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center in Virginia has also deployed Akumin’s AXIS unit, enhancing its surgical and diagnostic services.

The development aligns with Bon Secours’ goal of serving the Suffolk and Hampton Roads communities, expanding its services to meet local healthcare demands.

Akumin, a US-based healthcare company focused on radiology services, operates a vast network of imaging and oncology services across the US.

By leveraging advanced technology and mobile solutions, Akumin aims to improve patient care and expand access to essential diagnostics and treatments nationwide.

Howe added: “We are thrilled to have successfully deployed the initial units with our partners, Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto and Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center.

“In the coming weeks, we will launch an Akumin AXIS model equipped with LINAC (Linear Accelerator) technology for targeted cancer treatment, followed by a model with 1.5T MRI capabilities in the near future.”
