ECCMID, the annual meeting of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), is one of the largest, most comprehensive meetings in the fields of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and infection control. ECCMID programme director Winfried Kern outlines the highlights of the 26th ECCMID, which is set to take place in Amsterdam on 9-12 April 2016.

For a quarter of a century, infection specialists have gathered at ECCMID to learn about the latest innovations in their field, exchange ideas and network with colleagues from all over the world.

The programme committee has prepared a series of 150 presentations for the event, including keynote lectures, symposia and educational sessions, as well as more than 2,000 posters. Specialists from all disciplines in medical microbiology, infectious diseases, infection control and epidemiology are presenting research projects and discussing the most recent industry developments.

ECCMID anticipates seeing 10,000 attendees keen to learn about the latest research, therapeutic approaches and strategies in the battle against infectious diseases. Microbiologists, clinicians and public health experts will have the opportunity to exchange ideas on how to translate research findings into diagnostic tools, medicines, policies and training, and as such effectively deal with the world's most pressing infection problems.

Event of the year

Some of the most anticipated sessions include scientific symposia with winners of ESCMID's Excellence and Young Investigator awards, as well as oral presentations on groundbreaking findings. The keynotes will include lectures on novel approaches to vaccines, the microbiome and tuberculosis; plus lectures on the economic impact of drug resistance and the effect of non-human antibiotics on public health.

Young professionals will have the opportunity to discuss ideas and projects with renowned experts, as well as attending educational workshops and Clinical Grand Rounds - and, for the first time, sessions dedicated to nurses. For the second year, ECCMID will feature a pipeline corner where smaller companies are offered a platform to present early-stage antimicrobial therapies.

With the broader context of the healthcare challenges the industry faces today, professionals from clinical settings, microbiology and epidemiology will gather at ECCMID to disseminate evidence of advancements for the better prevention and control of infectious diseases.

Join the experts

The research and recommendations presented at the event - the world's largest congress focused on infectious diseases and clinical microbiology - help improve the diagnosis and prevention of infection, and the clinical care given to patients with infectious disease. Discussions on this vibrant platform not only raise awareness of emerging scientific questions, but they also have a significant impact on best practices and international policies.
