Bosch Healthcare Solutions - All-in-one diagnostics device

Could you tell us more about Vivalytic?

Martin Schulz: Vivalytic is a universal platform for molecular diagnostics. Various samples can be tested. Solutions rely on Bosch Healthcare Solutions core competencies in the fields of sensor technology, automation, miniaturisation and connectivity.

After ten years of groundwork in research and advanced development, Vivalytic is now offering an all-in-one package; no other cartridge-based laboratory device provides such a wide range of possible applications. The platform unites a wide spectrum of possible tests with a varying number of clinically relevant parameters on one device: Vivalytic. Vivalytic has an open design and the platform is compatible with molecular-diagnostic tests from various providers. This enables the range of available tests to grow continuously. These fully automated tests can save a lot of time in day-to-day clinical work. In doing so, Vivalytic supports successful therapeutic practices based on rapid diagnoses.

Where was Vivalytic developed?

The technologies used in the Vivalytic system were developed over the past ten years in the research and advanced development department at Bosch.

For Vivalytic, no other peripheral devices, like a laptop, keyboard, barcode scanner or filling stations, are required.

How does Vivalytic differ from other diagnostics platforms?

To date, Vivalytic is the first and only all-in-one platform of its kind. As a result, it has several unique features compared with other diagnostics instruments. The Vivalytic laboratory device allows you to perform tests that look for specific pathogens (Singleplex tests) and tests that look for several different pathogens at the same time (Multiplex tests) on one device.

At the same time, tests that previously had to be carried out with various devices or prepared manually are now processed in a single step with Vivalytic. This time saving helps hospital and laboratory staff. Various samples can be loaded into the cartridge without the need for preparation steps; for instance, tissue, fluids, swabs, blood, stools or sputum. Moreover, Vivalytic supports widespread laboratory test procedures for detection methods of molecular diagnostics, uniquely integrating all these procedures in a single system, including microarray, melting curve, real-time PCR and end-point PCR.

In the past, there were cameras for taking photos, mobile phones for making calls, and CDs and MP3 players for listening to music. The smartphone combines all of this in a single device. The Vivalytic system is similar in this respect. Laboratory test procedures that previously required several different devices can now all be performed using Vivalytic. Like a smartphone update, more tests will be continually added to the Vivalytic platform.

For Vivalytic, no other peripheral devices, like a laptop, keyboard, barcode scanner or filling stations, are required. This makes it a hygienic and space-saving solution. Vivalytic is easy to integrate into hospital or laboratory IT systems. This way, the results are immediately made available to the people involved with the diagnostic process.

What partners are you cooperating with?

We are currently developing the test portfolio with various partners. We have already established partnerships with Randox Laboratories and R-Biopharm for this purpose.

When will Vivalytic be available?

The Vivalytic device and first tests are expected to be available from the third quarter of 2018. The test portfolio will be expanded continuously thereafter.

How long will it take until more tests are available?

The continuous expansion of the test portfolio is ensured by short integration times. It is an explicit goal of Bosch Healthcare Solutions to have several tests approved within a year.
